Free Tuna Jan/May 2021
Graphic Design & Illustration

Originating from a playful linguistic misinterpretation between French and English, "Free Tuna" emerged as a whimsical concept. Mr. Ben received a distant directive to embody the spirit of "liberté de ton" or "freedom of speech." Regrettably, this directive was translated quite literally as "free tuna."

Prompted by this amusing mishap, I was commissioned to craft a series of illustrations embodying the essence of a 'free tuna'—a character symbolizing liberation amidst real-time challenges. These illustrations have evolved and adapted over time, maintaining relevance to current contexts.

Building upon this initial concept, I am actively developing a cohesive brand identity. In parallel, I have initiated the design of merchandise, initially distributed to selected partners and soon to be available for purchase through the Free Tuna social media platform.

quote from Mr. Ben about the project

“Why ‘Free Tuna’? This has become both a nickname and a slogan, to sum up, the need to speak your mind without fear of reprisal. I’d love to say it was born from a sort of major political or moral stand - but actually, it has more to do with some of the stupid rivalries and jealousy in the business world. My great friend and entrepreneur Patrice told me one day that it was fundamental to have ‘liberté de Ton’ in French. I jokingly translated this by ear as ‘Free Tuna’ - and now it’s our motto!”
