What if the High Seas were a country?

The liberation of the oceans begins with the elevation of its social and political agency. Through analysis of historical and literary perspectives rooted in art and philosophy, this proposal dismantles the humanised hierarchy of living.

The Ocean Nation elevates the High Seas through a government and parliament of scientists, researchers, and anthropologists to speak on behalf of its citizens, both human and more-than-human. These governing bodies are grounded in a moving embassy, a democratic dome on foreign soil, under the jurisdiction of its home country, the High Seas.

A Nation that challenges existing policies and legal theories that have facilitated resource extraction and the objectification of the natural world.

The Ocean Nation book, a 103 page compilation of project research. One extensive timeline is drawn beginning in the Then, a mythological review of oceanic perception, highlighting the power of imagination in protecting the marine world. The Now, draws from specific historical events leading to the transition of objects to subjects in the human and more-than-human contexts. The Soon, drawing from recent history and near futures regarding the transition of de-objectifying plausible subjects and potentials within this realm that could be applied to our oceans. And finally, the Next, a proposal of The Ocean Nation detailing its High Seas territory and parliamentary role in the future of marine conservation.
