B(ee) - Day Jan/May 2021
Product Design

A proposal by Juana Mom, Carla Rotenberg, José Ramón and myself, Francesca Norrington in the Product Design Studio at ie university with Professor Héctor Serrano.

This project was awarded the IE University Design Excellency Award

B(ee)-Day is a reusable creative game kit for children to make their own characters out of natural beeswax to demonstrate the importance of bees. Beeswax is melted in a melting pot and poured into silicone moulds. There are eight different heads, bodies and feet - each mould is inspired by natural shapes such as leaves, seeds and insects to create these miniature superheroes of nature. Once poured into the moulds, the characters can be placed onto a wooden stick and if necessary can be melted down once again to create endless characters.

The game creates a sustainable celebration surrounding bees that encourages children’s love for nature. It tackles the SDG goals 4 (Good Education), 12 (Responsible Consumption) and 14 (Life on Land) set by the United Nations.
B(ee)-Day takes a conceptual starting point such as circular - regenerative (and highly topical) issues as sustainable play in children. It thus further investigates creating a positive behaviour loop in children’s toys by combining educational practices of ‘re-using’ materials and promoting self-initiated game creation, encouraging children to invent their scenarios through simplistic toys they can project their ideas and characteristics onto. Working to avoid forcing a particular scenario and instead encourage children to engage with the beeswax figurines.
